Imagine if headlines proclaimed, “X-Ray Sees What Doctors Can’t” or “Lab Test Outperforms Physicians’ Clinical Gestalt.” Absurd, right? You can recognize how such claims distort the role these tools play in healthcare. So why do current narratives surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) sound so similar?

We’ve all seen the sensational headlines: “AI Chatbots Defeated Doctors at Diagnosing Illness” or Using AI to Detect Breast Cancer that Doctors Miss.” These bold proclamations grab attention, drive clicks, and fuel visions of a healthcare system powered by omniscient algorithms. But such hyperbole not only lacks contextual nuance, it subtly undermines public confidence and creates a false dichotomy between AI and human clinicians.

The problem isn’t just these headlines — it’s part of a larger pattern in the history of AI. Since its inception, AI has been caught in recurring cycles of “AI summers”, periods of inflated expectations and interest, and “AI winters”, when unmet promises lead to disillusionment and reduced funding. Today’s exaggerated claims about AI in healthcare risk repeating this pattern, damaging trust not only in AI but also in the broader field of medical innovation.

Exaggerated claims about AI’s capabilities don’t just mislead — they have real consequences for patients and providers alike. It’s easy to see how patients who are inundated with headlines proclaiming AI’s superiority may start to lose confidence in their human clinicians.

Even clinicians may be swayed by the hype. Consider the case of radiologists working with AI to interpret radiographs. When presented with AI-generated recommendations, clinicians may second-guess their own clinical judgement or defer to AI outputs, even when they are flawed. This is known as automation bias, and it isn’t just a theoretical problem, it’s well documented.

But the consequences extend further than skewed perceptions, biased decision-making, and cyclical overpromises and under-delivery. Overhype diverts focus and funding toward unrealistic ambitions rather than practical applications of AI. Implementations that can reduce administrative burdens, optimize workflows, and support clinicians in decision-making may not ‘defeat doctors’, but can be profoundly impactful on our healthcare systems. The danger here is not just misaligned priorities, but the missed opportunity to build trust and demonstrate AI’s value in helping solve real, practical challenges in healthcare.

So how do we move forward?

The media plays a crucial role in shaping how society perceives AI, so it’s time for responsible storytelling. Journalists, researchers, and developers bear responsibility for presenting AI advancements in a balanced manner, emphasizing limitations alongside achievements. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Instead of: “AI Defeats Doctors at Diagnosing Illness”, headlines could read: “AI Assists Doctors with Diagnostic Challenges, Offering New Hope.” Such framing underscores AI’s potential while grounding it in reality.
  2. Avoid saving the limitations and caveats for closing paragraphs — many readers never make it past the headlines.
  3. Avoid anthropomorphizing AI. Attributing human characteristics to AI can create confusion surrounding its role as a tool rather than an independent decision-maker.
  4. And avoid antagonism. Just as it would be strange to sensationalize X-rays or lab measurements for outperforming doctors, AI should be regarded as another tool to complement human clinicians, not replace them. Medicine is inherently collaborative, relying on the combined strengths of various tools, technologies, and human expertise. AI, much like any other innovation, should be evaluated on its ability to help improve outcomes, rather than being positioned as a standalone solution.

By tempering the hype, we can preserve trust in both AI and the healthcare professionals it aims to support
